4th of July Pet Safety

Posted On 2010-06-22 , 5:27 PM

4th of July Fun
4th of July is loads of fun for us 2 legged creatures but it can be a terribly frightening time for our pets. Loud noises sound much stronger to them and they think that it means danger. It can be the worst day of the year for many dogs and some cats as well. Do not take your pets to any Independence Day festivities. Keep them safely at home and make sure that if they can hear any loud noises that they are unable to run away and get lost. The following video tells you exactly how to prepare your pets for the holidays.

Summer is here and you may want to take your dog along on your vacation. You and your dog can have an awsome road trip. No one else can be a better companion. Fido will never tell you to ask for directions or say that you are going the wrong way or fiddle with the radio dial.

Here are some great dog travel safety tips from Melanie Monteiro, the canine safety expert. Be sure to keep a copy of her "Safe Dog Handbook" in your glove compartment.

And watch this video carefully and maybe take a few notes. Best wishes for a safe and happy summer for you and Fido.

You Can't Tell A Book From It's Cover Nor An Animal Lover From His Motorcycle

It seems that I am light years behind in my Video viewing. In my daily mail from FreeKibble there was a link to a video (which I have downloaded below) from the Ellen Show. Her guests for the day was Rescue Ink, an army of tattooed motocycle riding street guys. I had never heard of these guys before even though they have been on the small screen for a while and have their own show. No one looking at these big tough guys would ever think that they were animal lovers and protectors. Watch this clip from the Ellen show and let me know what you think. It just shows that you can't really judge a book from its cover. I look forward to reading your comments below.

Safe Dog Safety Tip : Just Say No, Fido

Here is another tip from Melanie Monteriros's "Safe Dog Handbook". Keep a copy of this book and pay attention to all the hints to keep your dog safe and well.

Marijuana can make your dog really sick. It is not an unusual situation. If you have any marijuana around keep it away from your dog. In the event that your dog does get into any marijuana you need to take him to the vet immediately.

Watch the following video and listen to dog safety expert Melanie Monteiro explain why dogs and marijuana are a bad combination.

Baybee is Entertained by Her Bird Friends

All Sunday Morning Baybee sat outside staring up at a corner of the barn where we have a busy birdhouse . She was completely fascinated by the comings and goings of the bird family currently residing there. I have never seen her so engrossed in anything like that. For hours she remained in this position not willing to miss any of the bird’s action. I have no idea what was going on in canine mind. Was she listening to their songs? Or did she think that she was guarding her little friends? Baybee was completely and totally entranced.
I have never been able to keep her attention like this.  I wish I knew what she was thinking.

Twenty-first Century Entertainment for Our Pets -- Doggie DVDs

When I go out and have to leave Baybee at home alone I usually leave the TV on so that she might feel that she had some company. She wasn't especially interested in the programs but there was no choice. Today, I just made the discovery that DVDs were available for pets and I can't wait until I get ours and see how Baybee reacts to her own special DVDs.  Maybe she will enjoy them almost as watching her bird family.  I hope so.

We have the choice of many DVDs for pets. Where have I been all this time? There are DVDs for dogs and cats and even birds . Maybe we have to try them all but I can't image how one can entertain a bird for goodness sakes.

How to Determine a Dog's Age in Human Years

Posted On 2010-04-02 , 1:16 PM

It is a old fashioned notion that a dogs year equal 7 human years. We now know that it much more complicated than that. Dog weight and breed need to enter the equation. All dogs age about the same until the age of 2 years then they branch out by size as well as years. The chart below will give you an approximate idea of your dogs age in human years.

Crufts Dog Show -2010

Posted On 2010-03-09 , 4:50 PM

Owners and dogs from all over the world will be arriving in Birmingham, England for the Crufts dog show, the largest on the planet. Some 28,000 dogs, representing 200 breeds plus mongrels will be shown. This is the first time that the all pedigree show will allow non pedigree pooches in an attempt to disprove the allegations that kennel clubs promote unhealthy and inbred pedigree dogs. The show will have working dogs and mixed breeds and will emphasis events such as agility training .

Vets have been enlisted to assist in changing the standards for some 70 breeds in order to increase the breed's health. As an example, dogs that are bred with very flat faces such as Pekingese and bull dogs have breathing problems due the the small nose passages.

The following video of an Irish Dancing dog was made at the 2009 Crufts Dog Show. Be sure to watch it.  You will be happy that you did. This dog and trainer are absolutely amazing.

Drinking Water for Your Dog

Drinking Water for Your Dog

Water is even more essential to your dog than food. Oxygen and water are the two most import nutrients in your dog's body. A loss of 15 percent of his body water will kill him and a 10 percent loss will cause serious illness. You dog can lose all of its fat and up to half of its protein and still be able to survive. So how much water does your dog need? As a general rule a dog should drink two and a half times more more water than food. And another general rule is one cup (8 ounces) of water for every 5 pounds of body weight. If you feed your dog dry food he will need more drinking water than if you fed him wet food as wet food contains water. Always have a bowl of water next to the food dish especially if the food is dry.

Be sure that there is lots of fresh cool water available during hot weather. Change the drinking water three times a day. You wouldn't like to drink from a dirty dish. Always scrub your dog’s dishes to make sure they are clean. (And my dogs love to drink from the fish pond. Ugh! Why is this? I don't know.) I have water dishes indoors and automatic water dishes outside that keep filling.

Do you dogs like drinking pond water? Or puddle water? Do you use automatic feeders and waters? Use the comments below to let us know your experience and observances.

This time warp picture shows how a dog's tongue works when he is seriously drinking water. Isn't nature amazing?

Dogs Plotting Mischief together

Bear and Jacques in Trouble

Dog Pals Making Mischief

Bear, the black lab, has been with us for 9 years while Jacques, the 100 pound plus Great Pyrenees puppy, has been a part of this family less than a year. Just a few days ago when I watched Jacques grooming Bear I realized that the two had finally bonded. (Actually, I had thought that only monkeys did this, but I digress.) A few yards from the back patio is a small pond where gold and white koi dart around under a miniature waterfall. In this pond also lives a pet turtle that enjoys sunning herself on one of the partially submerged rocks that peek up between the water plants. In the past we had had to rescue the turtle from Bear who wants to play with it or perhaps find out if it is eatable or not. At any rate, a dog with a turtle is not good news for the turtle. So, I was astounded yesterday when I walked out and saw Bear pointing and Jacques zooming around the pond and grabbing the turtle. (Turtle was rescued.)

I have never seen dogs work together like this and had no idea that they could or would. Does anyone else have any stories like this? I would like to hear about it---just leave your tale on the comments below.

How to Give Your Dog A Bath

Posted On 2010-01-21 , 7:08 PM

How to Give Your Dog A Bath

Bathing a dog is part of his well being. Most dogs need to be washed about once a month or when they get extremely dirty or smelly. If a dog is really stinky it may actually hamper his sense of smell because his own strong odor will cover other smells. It may even prevent him from finding his food or his home. Dogs depend upon their sense of smell much more than we do. A clean dog will not track as much dirt into your home and he will smell good. If you have a long haired dog you should brush and comb his coat before bathing so that all the knots and tangles are gone. They will be much harder to remove after a bath. Be sure to only use shampoo that is made for dogs. People shampoo is NOT for dogs. You may also want to use your favorite dog hair conditioner.

When the bath is over and Fido's coat is dry, give his coat a nice brushing and your pet will look and feel wonderful. If your dog is afraid of being bathed, then introduce it to him very slowly and give him a little treat at each step so he will associate the process as a good thing. During the hot summer days you can give Fido a shower with the garden hose and you will cool him and clean him at the same time. But most of all, try to make the dog bath one of the fun things that you do together,
